CYFEST-13 explored the relationship between chaos and cosmos: between formlessness and order, uncertainty and structure. Against the backdrop of accelerating technological change and overwhelming flows of information, the festival asked how new aesthetic systems emerge and whether traditional ideas of form and meaning remain relevant.
More than 70 participants from 17 countries took part in CYFEST-13. Among them were artist, curator, and e-flux founder Anton Vidokle; the Russian science art group Where Dogs Run; sound artist and media archaeologist Boris Shershenkov; Austrian artist Rebecca Merlic; Italian interdisciplinary artist Emilio Vavarella; and New York–based experimental musician Hans Tammen.
The festival program included exhibitions, sound art, video, and educational projects.
Students from the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, ITMO University’s Art & Science master’s program, and the PRO ARTE School for Young Artists also participated. Their works were presented at the Stieglitz Academy, Annenkirche, and ITMO University’s AIR Gallery.

CYFEST received the Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award in 2018 in the category Best Festival of Contemporary Art.
CYFEST-13: Cosmos & Chaos was the thirteenth edition of the CYFEST International Media Art Festival. In 2020–2021, it unfolded across Saint Petersburg, Moscow, and New York in collaboration with international cultural and academic institutions, including the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, the Youth Educational Center of the State Hermitage Museum, GROUND Solyanka Gallery, NY Media Center by IFP, the Kolodzei Art Foundation, Leonardo/ISAST.
